With early autumn arrives the mildly soporific aroma of freshly cut hay. Left to dry and cure for a few days, it is then baled and stored for the winter months, providing fodder for hungry farm animals. Cooking with hay is an age old art, dating back to at least Neolithic times when meat was wrapped in hay and then cooked in simmering water. The hay not only flavoured the meat but also helped preserve it before cooking. The Normans cooked their hams in hay, and in the absence of wood, salmon or trout could be smoked over smouldering hay. The lightly cooked mackerel was served with buttermilk and nasturtiums: sweet, salty and sour all combined beautifully to produce a dish that perfectly encapsulates contemporary Irish cooking. Though meat and fish fare well cooked in hay, vegetables also take well to its complex flavours. In my recent work, The Irish Cook Book, I included a recipe for kohlrabi baked in hay to showcase the ancient and the modern of contemporary Ireland. The cooking time may differ though.

Please refresh the page and retry. Cryptic crosswords traditionally offer the best mental workout but are difficult to grasp. Here we offer some essential handy tips to help you in your crossword puzzling and your cerebral rejuvenation. Cryptic crossword clues typically have two parts, usually a definition of the answer and an indication of that answer derived through wordplay.
The straightforward definition may be at the beginning or the end of the clue, but never in the middle. The two halves of the clue may often be joined in ways that obscure the separation. Both parts may contain words which appear to mean something contrary to what they actually indicate. Sometimes the hidden word may be written in reverse inside the clue — but the solver will be warned. The part of the clue that involves wordplay will contain all the letters of the answer but in a mixed order.
A shortcut to solving a likely anagram is to write the letters in a circle, removing all connection with the original clue word s , which may make the solution easier to spot. While pieces of a charade are usually indicated by synonyms, they can also be given explicitly like in the previous example. In the more complex version charades, the clues may be out of order, with instructions for putting them together.

A handful of date seeds from fruit that ripened around the time of Jesus have been successfully planted and grown in southern Israel , researchers have revealed. The seeds, dubbed Adam, Jonah, Uriel, Boaz, Judith and Hannah, were among many others discovered at archaeological sites in the Judean desert. That plant, a male, was named Methuselah after the oldest character in the Bible. But the new study goes further — not only involving more seeds, but shedding light on the way Judean farmers may have cultivated the famous plants.

An ancient crossword puzzle has been found, etched onto the walls of a Greek Orthodox church. The basilica on which the puzzle was found was built within the confines of an ancient agora of a settlement dating back 2,, years in the region where Smyrna was later founded. The puzzle contains top-to-bottom and left-to-right Greek words and looks like an acrostic with the same words defined running in both directions top to bottom and left to right in five columns.
Associate Professor Akin Ersoy, head of the excavations, says that the words are considered as belonging to a puzzle as there are benches in front of the wall paintings of the basilica where the graffiti was found. Answering assumptions about the crossword being used by Christians to communicate against oppression by the Roman authorities, Professor Ersoy points out that the crossword — since it is exposed and therefore would have been easy to see — could have been a pastime among the sellers of the marketplace during their spare time.
Ersoy said the ancient city which dates back 2,, years was one of the most important harbor cities in antiquity. Numerous inscriptions on the walls have been found in the past ranging from descriptions of ships and paintings of gladiators to love poems. During his work in the area, Ersoy found 3, letters, shapes, leaves, dogs and descriptions of ships and paintings of gladiators. He likens the graffiti to that of Pompeii. Log in to leave a comment.
